In the course of one week, West Mesquite went from being one of the contenders to the team to beat.

The defending district champions defeated both of its top challengers this past week to move into sole possession of first place in 23-4A.

The Wranglers (6-0-0-0, 18 points) have a three-point lead over Poteet (5-1-0-0, 15 points), who they defeated last Friday, and a six-point cushion over Forney (4-2-0-0, 12 points), who they knocked off on Tuesday.

Both of the games were tight, but West Mesquite found a way.

Against Forney, it was two goals from Isai Velasquez that were the difference in a 2-1 victory. The Poteet game was a defensive battle, but the Wranglers got a goal from Javier Garcia to post a 1-0 win.

The Pirates were able to bounce back on Tuesday, getting two goals from Charles Ojeda and another from Carlos Cardenas in a 3-1 win over Crandall.

The second half of the 23-4A season gets started on Friday with Poteet hosting Terrell, who is tied for fourth place along with Kaufman and North Forney. The Pirates then play at North Forney on Tuesday.

West Mesquite has a bye on Friday and will return to action on Tuesday with a road game at Crandall.
